Our friends at Mencap are looking for volunteers to support an ambitious new project, pairing up volunteers and people with disabilities that have a shared interest in live music. More details below:
About Mencap

Mencap is the leading voice of learning disability. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting people with a learning disability, and their families and carers.

Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included. We want everyone to have the opportunity to achieve the things they want out of life.

Volunteering with Mencap is YOUR opportunity to help create a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally and included in their communities.

Role Description

Volunteering doesn’t stop at 5pm, there is so much more to do and sometimes we just need someone to do it with.

In this role you will be:

You will be buddying up with an adult who has a learning disability to take part in enjoying attending evening and night life events together.

You will choose events with your buddy that you would both like to attend

You will be able to commit to a day of training, and then to meet up with your buddy twice a month for a year

You will be willing to travel to different venues to enjoy nightlife events together and choose different social outings based on your shared interests

You will be ensuring that your buddy in enabled to live an active social life and make their own choices about how they spend their social time

Gig Buddies is a volunteer befriending scheme for adults with learning disabilities, matching them with a volunteer who shares the same interests. Gig Buddies recognises that many people with learning disabilities don’t have many people in their lives who aren’t paid to be there, many opportunities to access evening or night life activities or much support that is based around a genuine shared interest. Gig Buddies was born out of the music scene in Brighton by the Charity Stay Up Late, but has evolved to be more than just about access to live music; Gig Buddy pairs can decide what their ‘Gig’ is and seek out opportunities to go to the pub, cinema, theatre or club night in the area.

The aim of the project is therefore to support people to develop new social circles and informal support networks. The act of volunteering while you’re doing something you already enjoy also makes the act of volunteering easier, more sustainable and for both parties is based on having fun and making friends.
